Introduction to Secrets of Karate
Welcome to the Secrets of Karate mini-course!
Understanding where and why Karate was developed will give you a better understanding of how the techniques of Karate should be practiced and executed. Karate was developed as an art of empty hand fighting. As you progress through the Secrets of Karate mini-course remember that over the 300 years of history and development, Karate became defensive in nature. A philosophy that still holds true today. Karate should only be used for self defense.
As Karate developed into a formalized combat martial art, the techniques evolved to the point that the Karate practitioner could cause serious injury or even death to an adversary or attacker. The entire body was trained and transformed into a weapon using these techniques. Many of these techniques of Karate were kept secret for fear of getting into the wrong hands and to give the practitioner an advantage.
Since Karate branched off of other combat fighting systems the original aspects of the traditional martial art systems were kept intact. These aspects are of areas of technique concentration.
With popularity of mixed martial arts and submission fighting many styles of karate and other martial arts have been looking for an advantage causing the reemergence of the nine original aspects of Combat Karate.
In the following Secrets of Karate mini course these aspects will be discussed and revisited for some who have forgotten and others who do not practice them all. The nine aspects of Karate are:
- Breathing
- Striking Vital Areas
- Pressure Points
- Joint Lock
- Grappling
- Training/Pain Control
- Throwing and Sweeping
- Choking
- Counters to all the above aspects
A word of caution about practicing the nine essential aspects of Karate: Practicing some of these techniques can cause severe injuries. Another reason they have been neglected, put aside, or just forgotten. Because of the time involved in developing skills in these areas most instructors focus on teaching their strengths. You as a Karate practitioner must keep these aspects within your training regiment.
Now that you know these, they are no longer secrets. The succeeding emails will be an in depth discussion on each of these aspects with tips on progressing and a few additional topics to quicken your progress in Karate techniques.
